contortgroup consults companies that do business on the web (especially startups) on product design, enrollment practice, positioning strategy, & outsourcing remediation.

contortgroup is actually just one person, Tom Gibbons. In the halcyon days of 1998, it was the style to fake being a big company working in a big "suite." Needless to say, the name stuck.

We branch out with our own ventures too.

Obama Used Conversion Rate Optimization to Win

Reasonably interesting assessment. They really nailed the web component of the campaign, obviously. But in this case, I wonder if the inverse control is true – they used the donation screen to decide what their victory shirt design would be.

Originally I thought this poster was a Springsteen documentary, but in fact it’s for a very cool looking ‘comeback’ movie for Jean Claude Van Damme.Good stuff. Looks fun. I’ll definitely make an effort to see it. JCVD @ Apple Trailers

Andrew Sloat

I’ve been meaning to post about Andrew since I ran into him near my house about a month ago. We went to school together, and back then (1998ish) I felt we were two of the few thinking about digital design outside of PageMaker jockeys making party and join-our-club flyers. My fellow Brooklynito has some badass stuff going on at the intersection of typography and performance. For those of you keeping score at home, ‘Sloat’ means ‘drainage ditch’ in Dutch. Similarly, ‘Bowery’ comes from ‘Boerderij’ in Dutch. ‘Boerderij’ means ‘farm’ in dutch. Manhattan was for grazin’ before it was for shootin’ and then gentrifyin’.Check it out:Andrew Sloat . com

CHDK / Canon Powershot Firmware Add-on.

Came across this trying to upgrade my Canon S80:

CHDK is a firmware enhancement that operates on a number of Canon Cameras. CHDK gets loaded into your camera’s memory upon bootup (either manually or automatically). It provides additional functionality beyond that currently provided by the native camera firmware.

James Bamford, Writer of Intelligence Books

I’ve read two of this guy’s books (Body of Secrets and A Pretext for War).Very informative books (if not a little tin-foil-hatty) with nicely detailed writing. For example, Bamford uncovered the fact that the first ‘official’ US casualty in Vietnam was an NSA employee (from Body of Secrets). The big picture? NSA’s got some big compudoros that have very big orejas.Bamford Interview @ WiredJames Bamford @ WikiPediaBush Is Not Above the Law – New York TimesBamford Bio @ NY TimesJames Bamford @ Amazon

Cabel Sasser’s Fancy Zoom

is the only time contort.com and johnmccain.com will have the same content. I was browsing the Republican candidate’s website and clicked on a photo, and voila, there was the familiar smooth lightbox animation and ‘X’ close widget I use on the ‘story’ section of my site..I sent Cabel an email making him aware of his success:

When it comes to people using my script and/or making money from it, I am 100% bipartisan. Thanks for the heads up! That is possibly the most prominent use yet!

It’s a two .js set up, and you don’t have to load scriptaculous, moo, jQuery, or anything else.Easy in, easy out, and looks and works great. Here’s the info:Fancy Zoom Updated
